Recommended Periodic Computer Maintenance

One Time

• Perform all Critical Updates at www.windowsupdate.com
• Install a quality antivirus program - Pay versions include Norton Antivirus, McAfee, Panda, Trend PC-cillin and Kaspersky. Free versions include AVG and Avast.
• Install Microsoft Defender - This is a free spyware/adware program from Microsoft.
• Install CCleaner - This free program cleans all temp files that build up on your computer.

Daily

These scheduled scans can be set to run at night. If you normally turn your computer off at night, simply leave it on a couple of times a week to allow the scans to run.

• Antivirus program - Run a full scan (can be scheduled)
• Microsoft Defender - Run a full scan (can be scheduled)
• Run CCleaner. This can be placed in your Startup menu folder.
• Backup your data. Whether you manually burn files to a CD or have an automated tape drive solution, make sure you backup your data daily. Click HERE for recommended backup strategies.

Weekly

• Make sure your Antivirus definitions are up-to-date.
• Make sure your Microsoft Defender definitions are up-to-date
• Download all Automatic Updates for Microsoft Windows or go to www.windowsupdate.com
• Backup your data. Perform your end-of-week backup

Monthly

• Run Scandisk
• Run Defrag
• Backup your data. Perform your end-of-month backup
